The Common Core State Standards are being implemented in kindergarten classrooms across the country. Now, more than ever, it is important to make sure that the apps being used in the classroom are aligned to those standards. PunFlay’s new apps, Measurement and Word Wall, are two perfect examples of how education technology has worked to align itself with the CCSS to make teachers’ lives easier while educating children.
Focusing on comparing length, weight, volume, telling time, and naming the months of the year, Measurement is a Common Core State Standards aligned app that is ideal for kindergarten students. The graphics are engaging and general neutral which makes it appealing to both boys and girls. Parents will like the ability to shut off the sounds in the control panel, but even after listening to them for some time they do not have the irritating voice over/sound factor that so many children’s apps have. Looking for a great app for your kindergarten classroom or your excelling preschooler? Measurement is an app worth investing in.
Focusing on the identification and reading of high frequency words, Word Wall is a fun and colorful app that encourages young learners to explore the words around them. It is aligned with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for easy application in the kindergarten classroom. Separated into six sections (writing abc, writing words, see and find, hide a word, bubble words, and jigsaw words) the app offers children a chance to explore common word families. The voice overs are encouraging when mistakes are made and exuberant when the user is successful. While the majority of the words are on the Dolch sight word list, there are a few words (i.e., whip) that seem oddly out of place. As the child collects words and masters the sight words, those words remain on their personal word wall for later reference. This offers a great opportunity for guided review of mastered words. Word Wall is an excellent resource for the classroom and beyond with easy correlation to CCSS for lesson planning.
Both the Measurement and Word Wall apps are available for download in the Apple App Store and are compatible with the iPad running iOS 4.2 or later.
