Guacamole is an avocado-based dip which is commonly served with tortillas. This Mexican condiment is also served with vegetable sticks, on toast, crackers, tacos, and burritos. The key to making a great-tasting guacamole dip lies in the quality of the avocados. You can prepare your own guacamole dip in 10 minutes or less.
Prep Time: 10 minutes
- 3 ripe avocados
- 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
- I/2 onion, minced
- 1 Roma tomato, diced
- 2 Serrano chiles, minced
- 1/2 cup cilantro, chopped
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Wash and dry your avocados.
- Place avocados on cutting board, and cut each one diagonally.
- Remove the seeds with a spoon or knife. If using a knife, hold a towel in the palm of your hand and place the half of the avocado with the pit onto the towel. Hit the blade of the knife into the pit, twist, and remove pit.
- Create a checkerboard pattern with the flesh of the avocados without cutting through the skin.
- Scoop out the cubes of avocado with a spoon, and place them into a bowl.
- Mash avocados with a fork or potato masher until chunky. If you desire a creamier texture, place the avocados into a food processor and puree until it reaches your desired consistency.
- Mix in lemon juice. This balances the flavor, while keeping the guacamole fresh.
- Add onion, tomato, chiles, cilantro, and salt and pepper to taste.
- Serve guacamole with your desired dish.
- To ensure that your avocados are ripe, gently press the broader sections of the avocados with your thumb. If they yield to the squeeze, you’ll know they are ripe.
- Oxidation is a common occurrence when avocados come into direct contact with open air. You can prevent this process from happening by covering the guacamole with plastic before serving.
- If your guacamole is too spicy, you can reduce its spiciness by adding sour cream or cottage cheese.
