Since writing is not my children’s favorite thing in the world to do – especially during the summer – I have to get creative when it comes to journaling.
This summer, we’ll be starting prompted journals to try and make writing a bit more fun for them.
The 30 June writing prompts below are what I have planned out in an effort to reduce the “I don’t know what to write about” whines that often accompany journal time.
With a prompt for each day in June, the kids can focus less on coming up with a topic and more on just writing down their thoughts.
Hopefully, anyway!
30 WRITING PROMPTS FOR JUNE
1.Imagine you’re walking to the store, a friend’s house, or somewhere else close by. Describe how you will get there and what you see along the way.
2.Have you ever caught a wild animal, like a bug, frog, or snake? Explain how you did it, or how you think you would do it, and what you should do with the animal afterward.
3.What is your favorite thing to do when you go outside? Describe what it is and what you like about it.
4.Design a secret code, then write about how you came up with the code.
5.What do you think is the most important quality for a friend to have? Why?
6.Do you think that boys and girls are treated differently? If so, how? Give examples.
7.Finish this sentence and write a paragraph to explain why: If I have kids, I will never…
8.If you could make a movie, what would it be about?
9.What is the most valuable thing that you own? If someone offered you a million dollars for it, would you sell it? Why or why not?
10.Think about your favorite author. What do you like about how he or she writes?
11.What would you do if you woke up and couldn’t talk?
12.What makes a person cool? Describe some specific things that they might say, wear, or do.
13.Describe a normal day from a pet’s point of view.
14.Write a poem about the view outside your bedroom window.
15.Would you rather have a new sibling or a new pet? Explain your choice.
16.If you had to leave your home and never return, what would you bring with you?

18.If you could decorate your room however you wanted, what would be in it?
19.Write a story about a power outage on a hot summer day.

30.Explain how to use a computer to someone who has never even seen one.

Simply cut them apart and tape or staple them in to your child’s journal – one per page – for the entire month.
Ta-da! No more “I don’t know what to write!” whines for an entire month!
