I received a free copy of the game and was compensated for my time, but all opinions are my own.
Multiplication hasn’t come easy for my kids. I know that for many dyslexic children, the memorization of multiplication tables is almost impossible. So, it never surprised me that my oldest had trouble memorizing them. What did surprise me was that the younger two struggled with memorization, as well.
We’ve tried songs and hand tricks, but it’s always been a challenge. So, I was especially excited to try some fun new math games called HoliMaths X by HoliGames. Based on the idea that learning multiplication doesn’t have to be laborious or boring, HoliMaths X promises to make the times tables fun for students and families. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that their promise actually held up and has made multiplication practice a lot of fun these last few weeks!
Multiplication Made Fun
We love family games, especially card games, and when the game combines learning and fun we’re all in. While the kids initially balked at the idea of playing a multiplication game (my fault for bringing the dreaded “multiplication practice” verbiage into the sentence), they now
hound me remind me each day that they need to play as part of their school work. And who am I to deny them such a fun game play experience (that’s secretly steeped in math fact practice!)?!
One of the reasons that they love to play HoliMaths X is that there are a variety of ways to play it. There are 10 to be exact. Purely from a consumer standpoint, I appreciate that I can use one game in so many different ways and still enjoy each one. It’s like getting a whole host of games for the price of one which is really, really appealing. While there are a bunch of different, unique ways to play, our favorite is a version based on the game of “War”. My kids are crazy competitive when it comes to card games and the “War”-style game play brings out their inner mathematicians.
As a homeschool mom, not having to argue with them about practicing math facts is worth its weight in gold. I’ve simply added the game to their daily work schedule and some days they play a few rounds before I’ve even had my second cup of coffee. The first morning I saw them playing at 7:30am, I was sold. I also wondered who those kids were and what had happened to my math-fact-practice loathing children?!
Math Games in a Box
So, what’s in the package? Well, there are playing cards and answer cards, as well as multiplication reference cards and a bag to mix the cards. While our box was in Spanish, the company is releasing the boxes and instructions in English, as well. Since there are 10 different ways to play, we found the videos on the HoliPlay YouTube Channel to be the most helpful in figuring out how to play it.
We tried the HoliMaths X 1-6 and 7-12 versions that are good for up to six players at a time and focus on mastering multiplication facts. I’d recommend starting with the 1-6 version first, as it reinforces the times tables from 1 through 6 and will help build your child’s confidence before moving on to the traditionally more challenging 7-12 tables. The kids have even gone all in and combined the cards from both games when they were playing it “War”-style, but be prepared for a long, long game. The good news is that it kept them entertained and focused on multiplication practice for over an hour when they combined both sets of cards!
