Homeschool curriculum can be the biggest challenge for new homeschoolers and veteran homeschoolers alike.

Here’s how we decide what to do.

We’ve tried a variety of curriculums – some pre-packaged and expensive, but mostly we’re eclectic in our approach.

I know it’s a big worry for those just starting on their homeschool journey, because it’s such an important decision – both academically and, in most cases, financially.

Homeschool Curriculum: What Matters Most

I thought I’d share with you what we’re planning on using in the hopes that it might ease some of your concerns over what to use.

Remember, all children are different, so what works for my kids may not be what’s best for yours.

Here’s some of what I’m thinking about doing for the 2014-2015 school year for…

The 1st Grader:

  • MamaTeaches Online CurrClick classes and monthly American Girl and Magic Tree House clubs
  • Read through the Magic Tree House series and base history lessons on them.
  • Spectrum workbooks for the mechanics of language arts, reading, science, social studies, and science.
  • Cursive worksheets
  • Easy Peasy  – for math especially
  • Lots of hands-on science experiments
  • Journaling
  • TaeKwon Do
  • Singing Class
  • Ballet
  • Swimming

The 5th Grader:

  • Minecraft Homeschool Classes – Base history and science lessons on each topic being covered.
  • Read through and complete the Harry Potter series.  Base a significant portion of the reading and writing assignments on those literature studies.
  • Spectrum workbooks
  • Easy Peasy
  • YouTube and blogging as a means of reporting and alternate lesson submission.
  • Advanced math work
  • Hands-on science experiments
  • Historical biographies each month
  • TaeKwon Do
  • Swimming
  • Boy Scouts

The 7th Grader attends an online charter school, so his lessons don’t have to be planned by me.

What are you thinking about using next year?
