Learning to take notes is an important skill, but one with which both of my older children struggle. In order to help them organize their thoughts and their notes, I created a simple note taking graphic organizer. This organizer is presented in the form of a circle (or oval, as the case may be) with a smaller circle in the center. There are eight sectioned parts to the large circle designed for note taking. After writing the research topic in the center, students then jot down their notes and facts in the surrounding sections.
I find that it works well for my boys, because it not only lets them organize their notes, but it lets them see how many more facts and details they need to find. Once they complete the organizer, they can then group the related facts into paragraphs. How do you teach your children note taking skills? Leave a comment and let me know!
