As any mama of boys knows, boys play differently, act differently, and are just plain different than girls.

When I brought up Thanksgiving with my tween-age sons, we launched into a discussion about Native Americans and Pilgrims.

Naturally, their boy brains went straight to arrows and bows.

While I put a firm foot down on no weapons at the Thanksgiving table, feather headbands were a friendly alternative.

In under 10-minutes your kids can whip up their own Thanksgiving feathered headband that lends itself to a great story about the First Thanksgiving.

Have fun crafting!

Thanksgiving Feather Headbands

Ages: 2+ (with adult supervision and pre-cut pieces)

Time: 10 minutes

Materials Needed:

  • Heavy construction/scrapbook paper or card stock: Brown, Green, Orange, Yellow (and any other color you would like your feathers to be)
  • White Glue, Glue Stick, or Tape
  • Kid-Safe Scissors
  • Pencil

Directions:

  1. Fold the brown piece of paper lengthwise into thirds. Cut along the folded lines to make strips for the band.
  2. Tape the strips together to fit the circumference of your child’s head.
  3. Draw and cut out three or more feathers from the heavy card stock/construction paper.  Hint: We like to use scrapbook paper that comes in the large packs, because it is thicker than construction paper, but not as tough as card stock for little hands to cut.
  4. To add texture, make shallow cuts along the edges of the feathers and gently bend them toward the front and the back.
  5. Glue the feathers to the back inside of the band.
  6. Feel free to decorate the band with designs, a Happy Thanksgiving message, or your child’s name.
  7. Have fun celebrating!
