This Marshmallow Playdough Recipe is so much fun to make!
Little hands will get sticky and gooey, but, when they work the dough they’ll find that the dough becomes firmer and their hands become a lot less sticky.
It’s like a mini-science experiment and craft activity all in one!
Mom-Approved Playdough Recipe
As a mom, I love this playdough recipe, because I never have to worry about the kids sticking some in their mouths.
It’s completely edible and, while they might get a bit of a sugar rush, it’s not going to do them any harm.
I also like that it uses Jell-O packets instead of traditional food coloring, because I find that it doesn’t stain their hands as much.
The fact that it doesn’t require cooking, cream of tartar, or salt makes it even better.
Tips for Using Marshmallow Playdough in the Classroom
If you’re making this in a preschool classroom like I used to when I was teaching, be sure to store it in an airtight container and for only a day or so.
Any longer and the playdough gets a bit funky.
If you’re looking for a longer lasting playdough, try a traditional recipe with cream of tartar and salt.
I also recommend having some wet wipes on hand as they’re much easier to clean little hands than paper towels.
If you’re using the marshmallow playdough, be sure that your playdough mats are laminated.
To clean the mats, just wipe them with a non-toxic wet wipe and you’ll be ready for the next child.
While I usually would recommend using your best play doh tools for creative play, this playdough may actually be a tad too sticky.

Marshmallow Playdough Recipe
Ingredients:
- 8 oz marshmallows (fresh works best)
- 16 oz powdered sugar
- 3 oz Jell-O mix (any flavor works well)
- 2 tablespoons of water
Instructions:
- Combine marshmallows, Jell-O and water in a microwave safe bowl.
- Microwave for about 30 seconds, then mix.
- Microwave for another 30 seconds, then mix again until smooth. It will be warm, so use caution when mixing – especially if little ones will be mixing.
- Add powdered sugar in small amounts and knead until stickiness is gone.
- Mold and play with as desired.
- Store in an airtight container for no more than 48 hours.
