Human Biology Curriculum for Kids

Share with your friends!

Are your kids interested in becoming doctors? Are they fascinated by the human body and its systems? But…does the thought of teaching human biology terrify you as a homeschool parent or teacher?

If so, you’re not alone! Teaching biology to kids can be an overwhelming experience. Thankfully, we discovered the neatest, most comprehensive, interesting human biology curriculum around!

Homeschool Human Biology Curriculum Review

I have been compensated for my time writing this post, but all opinions are my own.

Homeschool Human Biology Curriculum Made Easy

I love science, but I’ve never been great at it. In fact, my high school chemistry teacher suggested I consider an alternate career (I was thinking about becoming a Marine Biologist at the time) because I was so bad at science. I never wanted that experience for my kids. If they wanted to be something, I wanted them to know they were fully supported and that nobody would talk them out of something they were truly passionate about.

So, when I screen and review homeschool science curriculums, that drive to make sure the programs are supportive, as well as academically sound, is always in the back of my head.

Thankfully, Dr. Robin’s School of Pre-Medicine ticks all of those boxes.

My Kid Wants to Be a Doctor

One of the most important areas of study for students who want to become doctors is, of course, human biology. What better way to nurture your child’s curiosity and passion for medicine than by taking classes taught by a doctor?

Dr. Robin’s School provides video lessons and resources that are very in-depth and well-explained. Unlike some video courses, this one is engaging and interesting. The material is presented and explained in such a way that even those students who may not feel strong in biology can understand and really absorb the information.

As a teacher mom, I love that the program is just log-in and go. I don’t have to spend hours prepping materials or doing tons of research about what and how to teach biology. The kids can just log in, click on the next lesson, and learn!

It’s truly the most interesting and easy-to-use human biology curriculum we have ever used!

What Types of Lessons are Included in the Human Biology Curriculum?

When I say that this is a comprehensive human biology curriculum, I am not overstating the facts. Here are the main topics in the curriculum and then there are tons of lessons about specific topics within those main categories.

  • Microbiology – Bugs!
  • Eight Senses
  • Cardiology – The Heart!
  • Pulmonology – Lungs
  • Muscles & Bones
  • Endocrinology – Hormones
  • Head & Neck
  • Dermatology – Skin
  • Neurology – Nerves & Brain
  • Genetics & DNA
  • Medical Instruments
  • GI System & Kidneys
  • Bloog & the Lymphatic System
  • Nutrition

To give you an example of the specific lessons within the main categories, here are the lessons for Cardiology – The Heart!:

  • DIY Heart Pump
  • Systole & Diastole
  • Intro to the Heart
  • Blood & Blood Components
  • Taking Good Care of Your Heart
  • Stethoscopes
  • Intro to Blood Pressure

The video lessons in the Cardiology section range in length from 11-minutes to 36-minutes. They can be stopped at any point if your kids need a break, they can be rewinded or restarted if they need to rewatch a particular concept, and they are always available to be revisited.

There are also new lessons added frequently so there’s always new content to discover and learn about!

Is It Just Online Science Videos?

Great question! The short answer is – NO.

While the meat of the human biology curriculum is the science videos that Dr. Robin presents, there is so much more to the lessons than just watching.

There are optional worksheets (and their answer keys), recommended external links for research and viewing, book ideas, games, and more! If you’re a member of the Dr. Robin’s School of Pre-Medicine newsletter, you also get access to fun freebies like printable Human Anatomy Paper Dolls!

There are also “I Want to Be a Doctor” podcasts that you and your kids can listen to while running errands, cooking meals, or when hanging around the house. They come out every Wednesday and we love listening!

What Does Mom Need to Prepare Ahead of Time?

We have had some science curriculums that required a ton of prep, but not Dr. Robin’s School of Pre-Medicine. While she does have a supply list that includes things you might want to use to supplement lessons, there really is so much information in the video lessons themselves that you don’t even have to.

For your kids who need a bit more hands-on approach for their human biology curriculum though, there are always great suggestions for kinesthetic experiences for them. One of our favorites was blowing up balloons while talking about blood pressure. It was a great hands-on way for the idea of pressure in the heart to be demonstrated. I can’t imagine that my kids will ever forget the visual of the balloon expanding dangerously close to bursting!

So, unless you want to supplement the science lessons with hands-on experiences, there really is nothing for you to prepare other than making sure your internet is working!

I Just Want Unit Studies, Not the Whole Curriculum

That’s no problem either! While not all of the units are available as individual purchases at this time, the folks at Dr. Robin’s School have added The Human Body Basic Unit as a standalone product.
