The front of the Oregon flag displays the shield from the state seal, the words “The State of Oregon,” and the date “1859” (when Oregon went from territory to state).

The back of the flag is an image of a beaver, the official state animal of Oregon.

Portland, Oregon is known as the City of Roses.

While roses are not native to the state, they sure have become a big part of Oregon’s incredible wonders.

How did this happen, you ask?

Well, it’s believed that it all started with an invitation to a rose bush viewing in the late 1800s.

The beauty of the rose bush was so captivating that soon rose bushes were being planted all over the city.

Shortly thereafter, Portland earned the nickname of Rose City or The City of Roses.

Since 1907, Portland has been celebrating the beauty of roses with an annual Rose Festival!
