Why Teaching Rhyming is Important
Rhymes aren’t just for poets!
Teaching rhyming is an important concept for all students to practice.
Rhyming focuses on the sounds of words.
Rhyming words are similar but not identical, so you need to be able to separate the individual sounds in a word.
This is called phonemic awareness, and it is an essential reading skill.
Rhyming activities can also help the child’s brain sort words into phonetic families.
This will help him decode new words that resemble the ones he already knows.
Some rhyming words look similar to each other (such as “hat” and “bat”).
Others don’t resemble each other at all (like “through” and “two”).
Rhyming activities are a great way to practice decoding different vowel pairs.
