The book spoke of “a cake to be baked in small cups” and that, we think, was just the beginning of the infamous cupcake.
Back then, it was also common for cakes to be made in teacups leaving bakers with small cups of cake!
For that reason, the name cupcake makes sense.

Cupcakes Were Once Called Number Cakes
The term ‘cupcake’ was originally used as a way to remember the amount of ingredients to make a cake.
Each ingredient is measured by the cupful: 1 cup butter, 2 cups sugar, 3 cups flour, and 4 eggs.
This 1,2,3,4 recipe is why cupcakes were also once called number cakes.

Different Countries Have Different Names for Cupcakes
It’s true that cupcakes are a delightful treat all over the world.
However, they may go by a different name depending on where you are.
The people of Britain call cupcakes fairy cakes.
While the concept is similar (tiny little cakes), cupcakes in Britain have the tops removed and then cut in half.
Once the two halves are put back on top of the cupcake, the cupcake looks like it has fairy wings.
Hence the name, fairy cakes.
Similarly, fairy cakes can be called butterfly cakes too because of the winged appearance of the top.
