10 Fire Safety Tips for Kids
Talk about fire safety with kids!
Fire safety is an important topic to cover with children of all ages.
Speaking about the do’s and dont’s of fire safety will help kids to feel more comfortable should an unfortunate event ever take place.
Knowing the facts can give children the confidence to remain calm and act in a responsible manner.

10 Kid Friendly Fire Safety Tips
If you find yourself in a burning building…
1. Stay Calm
It is important for you to remain calm.
Staying calm and focused will get you to safety quickly.
2. Get Out
Knowing and practicing a fire escape plan is key to getting out of a burning building quickly.
An ideal fire escape route has at least two unobstructed exits from every room.
Draw a floor plan with arrows that show the best routes to escape.
Practice different fire escape plans with your family twice a year, both during the day and at night.
Decide on a safe place to meet, and call for help once you’re outside and at a safe distance.
Make sure you know emergency phone numbers, such as 911 and your parent or guardian’s phone number by heart.

3. Go Low
If you encounter smoke on an escape route, look for another way to get out.
If going through the smoke is the only exit, go low.
Get down and crawl until you’re outside.
The cleanest air will be 1-2 feet above the floor.
4. Feel First
Check doors before opening them to exit.
If it is hot, there is most likely fire on the other side.
If this is the case, find an alternate route such as another door or even a window.
5. Choose Stairs
On a second story or higher, always choose the stairs to go down.
Never take an elevator to exit a burning building.
6. Leave Everything
There is only one thing to do if ever in a place that is on fire: get yourself out.
Leave everything behind, and get to safety quickly.
Never return to or go into a burning building.
Ever.
Once outside and at a safe distance, call for help.
If you are hurt…
7. Stop, Drop, and Roll
If you find your clothes are on fire, stop, drop, and roll.
Do not run!
Stop right where you are and drop down to the ground.
Cover your face with your hands and roll back and forth over and over.
This will help to smother the flames and put the fire out.
8. Cool Minor Burns
If you find that you are burned, run cool water over the area.
Do this for about ten minutes to relieve the burn.
Have a doctor check the burn if blisters appear.

9. Check Smoke Alarms
Smoke alarms help to warn you in the event of a fire.
It’s important to check smoke detectors at least once a month to make sure they are in working order.
There should be at least one smoke alarm on every floor of the building.

10. Don’t Play with Fire
Items such as matches and lighters are for adults only.
If you find one, tell an adult immediately.
Never leave a candle, fireplace, space heater, or stove unattended.
Fires can happen in an instant and grow very quickly.
Fire Safety Tips for Kids
Educating children about fire safety is key to making sure they know how to protect themselves in the event of a fire.
Children who are aware of what can happen during a fire, the ways to escape a fire, and how to prevent a fire will be able to keep themselves, and others, safe.
As part of a course on safety we talked fires. I also explained about the different sorts of fire extinguishers. I mentioned a few different real life stories. I covered statistics as well.
I even got them to try a fire safety assessment tool. I also showed them pictures of house fires. I read out parts of articles and tested them on case studies too. Tasks included all of that.
